Let’s talk about parabens!
What are parabens?
Parabens are synthetic preservatives used in beauty and bath products to increase the shelf life of certain items. You can find them in pretty much everything including makeup, shampoo, deoderant, face creams and so on. Even brands that brand themselves as “Natural” can contain parabens, whats the point of something being organic if it also contains parabens?!
Why are people worried about parabens?
Some studies have shown that parabens can mimic estrogen in the body thus with prolonged exposure to them it can case an increased risk of breast cancer.
How do I know if a product I’m using has parabens?
Read the labels carefully and you’ll see listings such as methylparaben, proplyparaben, isopropylparaben, isobutylparaben, butylparaben, sodium butylparaben, if the word ends in “paraben” it’s in there.
Does this mean I have to stop using products with parabens in them right away? It’s going to cost me a fortune to replace everything!
Well, it’s a personal choice really. Products with parabens will not give you cancer over night and by using products with said ingredients in it doesn’t mean you are guarenteed to get cancer either. There is no need to immediately replace everything you own, but if you want to make small changes to reduce your exposure you can do it a piece or two at a time if you wish. There are many more product alternatives available on the market now that are paraben free. At Pretty Things Boutique we offer a line of vegan paraben free cosmetics called “Stript” which are paraben free and made from sustainable ingredients.
